Winter Course 2009/2010

1

ORDER OF PLAY AND TEES
The ‘Winter Course’ will come into play this year on Monday 2nd November. For the benefit of newer members, the winter course is played in the order of holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 13, 14, 15, 16, 10, 11, 12, 7, 8, 9, 17 and 18
We do this for two main reasons; firstly to change and so rest some of the walk off areas between green and tee and secondly to provide two starting points, at the summer 1st and 16th holes which become the winter 1st and 10th holes. This makes the playing of only 9 holes, which many members do on weekdays over the winter, a much more practical proposition. It does mean, however, that members starting at the winter 10th must ensure that they do not cut in in front of players playing the winter 9th and must give way to players playing a full round.
‘Winter Cards’ will be available from that date and you will note that there have been significant changes to the Stroke Indices. These changes have been brought in to conform, so far as is practicable, to CONGU guidelines. For those interested, you will find the guidelines in Appendix G on page 62 of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System 2008-2011 book, a copy of which is available in the main lounge.
From 2nd November there will be no white tees and all distance marker posts will be withdrawn as they would show incorrect information. New marker posts will be in course of production as there will also be revised stroke indices for next season.
All competitions over the winter period will be played from the yellow or red tees, as appropriate.

TEMPORARY GREENS
Temporary Greens are delineated by broken white lines and if there is no flagstick present, the temporary green is deemed to be a wrong putting green and relief must be taken in accordance with Rule 25-3. Equally, if there is a flagstick on a temporary green, the normal green is deemed to be a wrong putting green.

TEE MATS
During the winter, some tee mats will be used to protect the tees from damage caused by players’ feet and clubs. When in use, players must tee up and stand on the mat when playing their tee shot.

PREFERRED LIES
With effect from Monday 2nd November, ‘Preferred Lies’ will be in operation. The specimen Local Rule in the English Language edition of the Rules of Golf is in effect – see pages 132 and 133.

FAIRWAY MATS
The mandatory use of Fairway Mats will be introduced at a later date when conditions dictate and members will be advised accordingly.

Starting System for this Winter

Members are advised that with effect from Monday 26th October 2009 until Sunday 28th March 2010 the Professional Shop will be operating on the following winter hours :-

Monday to Friday - 8.30am to 4.00pm

Saturday & Sunday - 8.00am to 4.00pm

The “Course Closed” sign will be located on the first tee until the course is open to play and no play is allowed on the course prior to this sign being removed by the Greens Staff or the Starter. The sign will be removed and the course opened for play as soon as it is in a condition for play, in compliance with Health and Safety guidelines.

The first bookable tee time will change throughout the winter in accordance with daylight hours.

With effect from Saturday 10th October, the current Tee Booking Trial System will cease and all oral and written observations, both in favour and against, will be considered before next season when we hope to introduce an Internet booking facility, in addition to ‘in person’ and telephone bookings.

golfballThe ball in the chute system will be introduced for Saturday mornings only, commencing on Saturday 10th October 2009 and will operate as last year with the chute being placed outside the Professional Shop until such times as the Starter arrives at which time it will be placed inside the Professional Shop. Members arriving before the shop opens are reminded that only their own ball i.e. one ball should be placed in the chute.   A starting sheet, with 7 minute intervals, will take effect from 10.00am and be available throughout the day. The chute will only be in use until 10.00am at which time the normal reservation system will operate. The starting sheet for the following Saturday will be available in the clubhouse lounge when the clubhouse is opened at 7.30 am.

(Members who wish to use the ball in the chute method should be aware that persons who have booked times on the Reservation system from 10.00am onwards will be given priority on the tee.)
